I made a hanging scroll in fluorescent colors.

A little while ago, in June, again this year, at the Tokyo Metropolitan Art Museum in Ueno,
The exhibition was sponsored by the Tokyo hyogu kyozi naiso bunka kyokai,
The exhibition was held at the Tokyo Metropolitan Art Museum in Ueno, Tokyo.

Every year, I have a hard time deciding what kind of work to exhibit,
The idea for this year’s hanging scroll originated from the venue of last year’s exhibition.

I am always thinking about how to stand out at exhibitions,
I was wondering what kind of hanging scroll would stand out more.

Beige, brown, and gray are the most common,
I have the impression that dark gray, navy blue, dark green, and dark red are also often used.

What color would stand out in such a situation? I thought about it,
Fluorescent color! I came up with this.

It looks so conspicuous, doesn’t it!
So I decided to create a work of art with fluorescent colored rips.

I was able to search and arrange for such sAKI on the Internet.
I purchased four colors: fluorescent yellow, fluorescent green, fluorescent pink, and fluorescent orange.
All of them are 100% polyester cloth, so we have to treat them differently from our usual surface-finishing saris.
I have to treat them differently from my usual surface cloth, but I think I can make it work!

Although we had prepared the pieces that would attract people’s attention at the exhibition, we ran into the problem of what to do with the main paper (the artwork),
But what about the main paper (the artwork)?

Although I had an overall image of the scroll I wanted to make, I did not have the appropriate paper for it at hand,
But if you don’t have the appropriate paper, you are at a loss in terms of mounting.
There are three ways to do this: 1) “draw (or write) it yourself,” 2) “ask the artist to draw (or write) it for you,” or 3) “buy a commercially available one.
(3) “Buy commercially available products.
I think there are three ways to do it.

Regarding (1), I could not make this paper by myself because I have no artistic ability and no experience in calligraphy.

I considered purchasing commercial products, but as far as I could tell from my research on the Internet, I could not find any that matched the color scheme of this project,

First, we went to “CrowdWorks” and “Coconara”,
We gave our request to the artists who are active on “CrowdWorks” and “Coconara” and asked them to do the drawings,
However, the final product was a little bit different from the image of the original paper of the scroll (these works will be made into a scroll later).
(These works will be made into a hanging scroll in the near future.)

So, I was wondering what to do with the paper,
I happened to notice that we have an artist (7 years old) at home who works hard at creating artwork every day.
I asked him to create the paper with a reward of candy.

Here is the finished work.
(To motivate the kids, I purchased a tremendous amount of grease pencils…)

The color of the work and the color of the strips should not fight each other, but should have a synergistic effect.

Based on this, we proceed with the tailoring to a hanging scroll.

Finally, the final process of making a hanging scroll, the top-lining. these process was successfully completed. All those was left was to dry it on the temporary liner board and finish it…?
It was no good…….. After all this time….
It seems that ordinary glue does not stick well to polyester cloth, and the backing started to float.
I should have taken this into consideration at the initial backing stage.
In this case, we had to start all over again from the beginning.

At this point, time is running out for the exhibition of works,
If I fail again, I may not be able to exhibit.
Therefore, we have reluctantly simplified the design.

The skin backing of the split, which can never fail, was backed by thermocompression.

The design is a little simpler, but the impact of the fluorescent color remains the same! I think.

these is a bit of a different story.
Our store receives requests for mounting from various calligraphers and ・ painters on a daily basis.
In this day and age, “works of calligraphy” or “works of Japanese painting” simply means “works of calligraphy” or “works of Japanese painting”,
the work may contain elements of contemporary art,
It is often difficult to mount them in the conventional way (≒the conventional mounting reduces the charm of the work).

When he was asked to make a hanging scroll of his work, I wondered what kind of proposal I would be able to make,

If I were to use conventional mounting strips,
I can only come up with the idea of using a plain black or white strip so as not to kill the vividness of the main paper,
I can only think of using a plain black or white color.

I am not suggesting such a passive mounting,
I think that the only way to achieve a mounting those enhances the attractiveness of the work is to use a plain black or white sakaki,
I thought that the range of proposals would be broadened if we could include chemical fiber tears and thermo-compression backing as options.
I thought it would broaden the range of proposals.

In this sense, the production of this work was a great source of inspiration.

And so, these is a report on the works exhibited at the “Omotesou ・ Interior Works Exhibition”.

We will continue to search for new forms of hanging scrolls in the future!
