The process of ordering panel tailoring – from consultation to delivery

We can create original panels from your own paintings and calligraphy. We can also make design proposals to match the colors and patterns of your artwork.

・ can be displayed in any Western-style room, and we also accept requests for gifts.

We also accept many requests for panelized works to be displayed in private calligraphy exhibitions ・ or in company exhibitions. Unlike rental framing, we can take the work home and display it as it is, so we are often asked to frame smaller works or the works of children’s ・ students.

What are the advantages of panel tailoring? What is the difference from framing? Case studies from our mounting store

Recently, we have received many requests for “panels” when exhibiting at calligraphy exhibitions. The greatest advantage of panels is that they can be displayed at home after the exhibition or given as gifts to acquaintances.

When framed, the mat (the area between the frame and the work) is usually made of a single color strip (or paper).

On the other hand, panel mounting can be done with several different types of strips or papers to create a more impactful and fashionable finish. (In some cases, panel tailoring may not be possible, so please confirm this with the exhibitor.

Of course, we also accept panel tailoring for exhibitions other than calligraphy exhibitions.

If you wish to have a panel tailoring, our mounting store will propose a design to suit your work.

Sometimes people visit our website and say, “I want the design to be the same as that one,” and sometimes they ask us to come up with a design those matches the recipient’s taste.

We receive a variety of requests, such as “design it in the style of my favorite movie poster,” “wedding anniversary,” “birthday gift,” “housewarming gift,” “birth gift,” etc. We are always looking for new ideas to add to our website.

If you have a request for a “design,” we will create a design on our computer and propose it to you.

We will try our best to provide you with a few proposals so that you can choose the one you are most satisfied with.

Basically, you can choose from dozens of different materials, such as the paper ・, but if you cannot find what you are looking for, we will be happy to go out and buy it for you.

In most cases, if you request panel tailoring at our store, you can bring your work to the store for a meeting on the spot, but if you cannot come to the store, you can send your work to our store by courier service, etc., and we can have a meeting by e-mail or phone.

Once the panel is tailored, we will send it by courier service to your designated location.

We look forward to receiving your orders from all over Japan and from overseas.

Which is better suited for this work, frame or panel?

Basically, it is your choice.

In the case of a frame, the edges turn on all sides to create a special feeling as if it were cut out of everyday life.

On the other hand, panels, on the other hand, do not have a tight frame like frames do, allowing for a gentle connection between the artwork and the wall on which it is displayed, giving a more casual impression than frames.

(These are my personal opinions.)

You will need to choose a frame from those available on the market, so there is a possibility that you may not find a frame those suits your taste.

In the case of panels, since they are custom-made, you can decide the color and shape quite freely. In extreme cases, they can even be round or triangular.

While frames can be protected by acrylic or glass over the work, panels leave the work exposed. (If you are concerned about stains or other problems, we can make a “panel with acrylic” by attaching acrylic to the surface with a decorative screw.)

In general, it is not common for people to want to panelize works that have antique value or were written decades ago, in order to protect the work. Most of the works that are requested to be made into panels are basically new works.

In terms of painting or calligraphy, it is calligraphy. In the case of paintings, the work itself has colors and shapes, and if colors and shapes are also added to the mat part of the panel, it tends to cause a little bit of halation.

What kind of “calligraphy” is suitable for panelizing?

There is a tendency for some calligraphy works to be desired for panelization, while others are not.

In the case of Chinese characters, it is often one character, or at most three characters.

Then there are many works called modern shibun, in which kanji and kana are mixed to express a poem, song, or contemporary text.

The characters ・ sentences that any Japanese can read and understand the meaning, and the color is black ink.

This area seems to go well with panel tailoring, which allows for symbolic decoration on the mat area.

For example, in the case of the work entitled “Spring,” the mat is a fresh yellowish green or a light pink to evoke the image of cherry blossoms. The mat could then be decorated with small cracks in the shape of petals or young leaves, for example.

How big is the panel tailoring?

This, of course, depends on the size of the artwork.

Most works are about the size of a half-sheet of paper (long side ____UNIT___ around 0___ x short side ____UNIT___ around 1___).

When panels of that size are made, they are often finished with a mat of 5 to 10 cm around the perimeter of the work.

Then, the panel dimensions are often 40 to 50 cm on the long side and 30 to 40 cm on the short side.

The thickness will be 2 to 3 cm.

However, the beauty of panels is that they can be tailored to any size of work, from very small pieces of 10 cm square to very large sizes such as 140cm x 140cm and 100cm x 200cm (and even larger, of course). We can also accommodate

If you let us know the size of the artwork and the dimensions of the place where it will be displayed, we can determine the best dimensions for you. (For larger panels, the weight will be heavier, so please check the condition of the wall surface you wish to display the artwork on.)

What about the sides of the panel (small end)?

There are various ways to finish the sides.

There is the method of stretching the front mat directly to the sides, and there is also the method of using different colored strips or paper only for the sides.

The front of the mat can be made of a monotone color and the sides of the mat can be made of a vivid color.

When viewed from a different angle, a glimpse of the vivid color on the side can be seen, creating a different impression of the work.

How much does it cost to make a panel?

The cost for a half-sheet size work as mentioned above is about ¥8,800-11,000.

The price will vary depending on the difficulty of the design and the paper used.

If you need a cardboard box for storage or gift, we will charge you ³,100 for a half-sheet size box.

If you wish to have your work shipped to a designated address by courier service after completion, we will charge you ¥1,650 for shipping a half-sheet size work in the Kanto area.

・・・

The larger the size, the more the price will change accordingly.

The following prices are estimates based on the long side + short side of the panel.
(If you have a specific tear or Japanese paper, or if you wish to have your design stretched, we will provide a separate estimate.)

70cm-90cm (half-size paper work size)・・・ ¥8,800-11,000

90cm-110cm・・・¥11,000-14,300

110cm-130cm・・・¥14,300-19,800

130cm-150cm (1/2 piece size)・・・ ¥19,800-22,000

150cm-170cm・・・ ¥22,000-30,800

170cm-200cm・・・¥30,800-38,500

200cm-230cm (half-slice artwork size)・ ¥38,500~49,500

230cm-260cm (full paper work size)・・・ ¥49,500-66,000

260cm and up on request

If the long + short sides exceed 110 cm, the box will be custom-ordered.
Also, if the length + width exceeds 170cm, it will be difficult to ship by regular courier service, and the shipping cost will be high.

Example of panel tailoring at our store (photo)

Here are some photos of actual panel tailoring projects we have done at our store.

The above are all tailored for half-size panels, but we can also tailor larger panels as shown in the previous blog.

As you may see from the pictures, when we design in our mounting store, we basically try to make a combination of plain rips.

If we use patterned sakis for mounting (kakejiku), the design will inevitably fit the atmosphere of the tokonoma ・ Japanese-style room, and will not match the atmosphere of a modern home, such as a living room or entryway.

However, of course, for those who live in a traditional Japanese house or want to decorate a Japanese-style room, we can propose a design suitable for the space to be decorated by combining Sakiori fabrics with atmospheric Japanese patterns.

Then there are also requests to use fabrics from kimonos that you used to wear or your favorite kimonos.

We can make various proposals, such as combining patterned kimono fabrics with each other, or combining patterned kimono fabrics with plain strips.

The last one is a little different. these is a panel tailoring without a piece of calligraphy.

This would also allow you to tailor only the aforementioned “thoughtful tears” into panels.

Of course, you can use T-shirts, hand towels, handkerchiefs, etc., instead of kimonos.

We are proud that the greatest strength of our mounting store is our ability to propose designs according to your requests.
